Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her maternal grandparents and mother. She is an only-child. Scott was a student at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she enrolled in Temple University. In addition to working two job opportunities, Scott also studied secondary teaching at Temple University. She planned to become the high school's English teacher. However, her dream was ended when, after three years of study and being a teachers aide she dropped out of college. She started her career doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. Then she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by the duo. At the Roots performance, she was spotted as an artist. After that, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience the arts of performing during the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was the first signing artist to the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
